What is Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon sinuplasty is a procedure designed to treat recurring sinus infections and chronic nasal conditions that include symptoms such as difficulty breathing through the nose, facial pain and pressure, and tension headaches.

Balloon sinuplasty is an innovative, endoscopic procedure performed under local anesthesia, but it does not require incisions or the removal of any bone or tissue. There is minimal pain, a low risk of infection, and less or minimal bruising or swelling. After a balloon sinuplasty, many patients are often able to return to their normal activities in less time than they would from traditional "open" sinus surgery.

What Happens During a Balloon Sinuplasty?

Your balloon sinuplasty will be done under local anesthesia so that you remain comfortable throughout the procedure.

Dr. Tansavatdi will insert a guide wire catheter equipped with a tiny balloon through your nostril and into your blocked sinus passageway. Once there, the balloon is inflated, which gently opens and widens your sinus passageway. You may feel some numbness or pressure while Dr. Tansavatdi performs this maneuver, and you may hear a crackling sound as your sinus shifts and opens.

Dr. Tansavatdi will then deflate and withdraw the balloon, leaving your sinus passageway open. This allows normal sinus drainage and function. While nasal packing is not always necessary, if she determines it’s needed, Dr. Tansavatdi may use nasal packing to ensure the safest, most effective healing process.
