Why do wrinkles form?

When you look in a mirror and see the lines that have appeared on your face over the years, you may not realize that you’re looking at two different kinds of wrinkles. Each one has a different cause and requires a different treatment to get the best results.

Dynamic wrinkles

Dynamic wrinkles occur as a result of repetitive muscle movements. There are dozens of muscles in your face that work in harmony so you can chew, speak, and express the complete range of human emotions. These muscles contract when you smile, squint, laugh, frown, or furrow your brow. Sometimes the skin above the contracting muscles moves too, creating the lines we call dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles disappear when you stop making the expression and your muscles relax. Over time, as you continue to make the same expressions for months and years and decades, the lines can become deeply ingrained in your skin.

Static wrinkles

Static wrinkles are visible when your face is at rest. This can occur when a dynamic wrinkle becomes a permanent fixture of your face or when a crease that is not related to muscle movement forms. As your skin ages, its internal structural system of collagen and elastin breaks down. The tissues lose elasticity and start to sink: a process that can be worsened by sun damage, a poor diet, smoking, an inadequate skincare regimen, and other lifestyle or environmental factors. Whether your muscles are moving or your face is in a neutral expression, static wrinkles are present.

How does Botox work?

Botox is made of a neurotoxin—botulinum toxin type A—that is derived from bacteria and purified. It’s used to temporarily paralyze wrinkle-causing facial muscles, thereby slowing the aging process and diminishing existing telltale signs of aging. Normally when you make an expression, your nerves send out a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine

This binds to receptors in your muscles and prompts them to contract. Botox works by inhibiting the transmission of acetylcholine from the nerves to the muscles, thereby blocking the signal and causing the muscles to relax. As a result, your expressions soften and the dynamic wrinkles on the surface of your skin become less visible.

Botox for Migraines

Treating migraine headaches is one of the many uses for which Botox is FDA-approved. For more than a decade, Botox has helped people who suffer from migraines to experience relief from the pressing condition.

Botox is particularly effective for people who experience very frequent migraines and is FDA-approved for “chronic migraines” which is classified as having a headache for 15 or more days per month.

When Botox is used to treat migraines, it is injected around the pain fibers that are involved in headaches, and it enters the nerve endings to block the release of chemicals involved in transmitting pain, thus reducing or entirely preventing the occurrence of migraines.

Patients seeking relief from migraines through Botox may need two or more treatments before the pain begins to dissipate, and should experience increased relief from pain with more frequent treatments. Treatments last from 10 to 12 weeks and may cut in half the number of days on which you experience a migraine.

*Individual results and experience may vary.

Other uses for Botox

In addition to its cosmetic benefits, Botox also has medical applications. Botox injections are used to treat excessive perspiration (hyperhidrosis), chronic migraine headaches, pain caused by TMJ syndrome, muscle spasticity, eyelid spasms, an overactive bladder, cervical dystonia, and a range of other conditions that affect how the body functions. Most Botox procedures are cosmetic in nature and are therefore not covered by health insurance; however, if the treatment is prescribed by a doctor to address a medical issue, the costs may be covered.

All about injectables

Within the broad category of injectables, there are several different types of products that address different concerns in different ways. Your optimal treatment plan may involve Botox alone or may include a combination of injectables that offer comprehensive anti-aging benefits.

Wrinkle relaxers

Botox is the most widely known and popular wrinkle-relaxing injectable. Others in this category include Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. Each of these products temporarily paralyzes facial muscles by blocking signals from being delivered between the nerves and the muscles. While they are all generally similar, there are key differences between them. The primary distinction lies in their formulation, which influences how much of the product is needed, how much the product spreads after it is injected, how quickly patients see results, and how long their results last.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers minimize static wrinkles and restore facial volume that naturally diminishes with age. Unlike Botox, dermal fillers do not affect the muscles that cause wrinkles. Instead, they work by “filling in” or “pushing out” wrinkles to smooth the skin’s appearance. There are many FDA-approved dermal fillers available including Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, Belotero, and Sculptra. These vary in cost, composition, thickness, function, and longevity. Some types can be reversed with the injection of a specific enzyme, while other fillers can only be absorbed by the body and dissolve over time.

Combing Injectables

Injectables are a non-surgical, minimally invasive, natural-looking method of rejuvenating the face and improving signs of aging. In some cases, Dr. Tansavatdi may recommend a combination of injectables to achieve the best results.

What exactly is a “unit”?

Vials of Botox typically contain 100 units, and there are some things to keep in mind when it comes to how many units are needed for different areas of the face. For starters, men require more units because their muscles tend to be stronger than female muscles. Although every patient will be different, below is a rough guideline of how many units are needed for each area:

  • Forehead lines: 10 to 30 units
  • Glabellar lines (11’s): 10 to 25 units
  • Vertical lip lines: 2 to 7 units
  • Crow's feet: 5 to 15 units per side
  • Bunny nose lines: 5 to 10 units
  • Playtismal bands: 10 to 30 units
  • Corners of mouth: 3 to 6 units

This initial evaluation can usually take place on the same day as the injections.

Botox treatment details

Botox is administered at Dr. Tansavatdi’s Westlake Village plastic surgery practice, and requires only a 10- to 15-minute office visit. Before the injection, your face will be cleansed, and the area(s) to be treated will be marked to ensure safety and accuracy. The Botox will then be administered using an ultra-fine needle that minimizes discomfort. Though individual tolerance varies, most patients experience little or no pain during the injections, and do not require any anesthesia. Overall, Botox is popular and trusted due to its significant results, convenience, and high patient satisfaction rate.

Botox downtime and recovery

Patients are able to return to their usual activities immediately after receiving Botox injections. There’s no standard downtime or recovery period, although strenuous activities and/or exercise are discouraged for the rest of the day for best results. Patients should also avoid lying flat for at least four hours after treatment. Subtle swelling or bruising at the injection sites is common and subsides quickly over the next 24 to 48 hours. Other less common side effects include temporary facial weakness or drooping, dizziness, and headaches. Dr. Tansavatdi will describe all potential side effects in detail before your treatment, and will provide you with aftercare instructions.

Before & After BOTOX

Life after Botox

Results from Botox will not be apparent right away. It takes 2 to 7 days to take effect, after which you will be able to enjoy your results for 3 to 6 months. A Botox treatment can take 5 to 10 years off your face. Your wrinkles will be less apparent, and your overall appearance will be refreshed and youthful. And despite all the Botox jokes, you will still be able to make natural facial expressions. After several months, as the Botox begins to wear off, muscle movement will gradually return and treated wrinkles may re-appear.

Botox cannot permanently eliminate wrinkles; therefore, regular touch-up treatments are required to maintain results. Some patients find that their results last longer and they can space their treatments farther apart with repeated injections. Dr. Tansavatdi will recommend a customized treatment schedule based on your unique results.

Enhancing the results of your Botox treatment

Dr. Tansavatdi often uses Botox as part of a larger anti-aging plan. Botox is usually combined with other treatments to help patients look younger and more refreshed without surgery. Many other non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments also pair well with Botox, such as a facelift, brow lift, or eyelid lift. Dr. Tansavatdi can customize a selection of procedures to your specific aging concerns to deliver optimal treatment and results. You may find that another procedure goes in perfect harmony with your Thousand Oaks Botox treatment.

A non-surgical, no downtime answer to anti-aging

Once upon a time, the only way to combat the signs of aging was with surgery. Though highly effective, surgery is not always appropriate or desirable for everyone because of its considerable downtime and recovery process. Botox is now the treatment of choice for many individuals who want to refresh their appearance without anesthesia, incisions, or downtime. It is convenient and highly effective. In addition to offering Botox, Dr. Tansavatdi offers many non-surgical skin care treatments and facial fillers.

Is Botox right for me?

If you’re interested in Westlake Village Botox treatments, you may be an excellent candidate. Most individuals over the age of 18 who want to reduce the presence of dynamic wrinkles are candidates for Botox injections. To know for sure whether Botox is right for you, Dr. Tansavatdi will carefully examine your areas of concern and review your medical history. The number of units and treatment areas are individualized to each patient after a discussion of their goals and an assessment of their anatomy, facial tone, and muscle strength.

If Dr. Tansavatdi decides that you are not a good candidate for Botox at this time, she can work with you to create an anti-aging plan made up of more suitable treatments. You may not be a candidate for Botox if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You are allergic to ingredients in the product
  • You have a neurological condition
  • You have an active skin infection or condition

BOTOX Recovery Tips

1. Follow Post-Treatment Instructions:

Pay close attention to any instructions your healthcare provider or cosmetic surgeon provides. They will give you specific guidelines tailored to your treatment.

2. Avoid Touching the Treated Area:

For the first 24-48 hours after your Botox injections, avoid touching or massaging the treated area to prevent the toxin from spreading to unintended muscles.

3. Stay Upright for a Few Hours:

It's recommended to remain in an upright position for a few hours after treatment. This helps prevent the Botox from migrating to other areas of your face.

4. Avoid Intense Physical Activity:

Refrain from engaging in strenuous exercise or activities for the rest of the day following the treatment. Elevated heart rate and increased blood flow could potentially distribute the Botox to unintended areas.

5. No Alcohol or Blood Thinners:

Avoid consuming alcohol and blood-thinning medications or supplements (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen) for at least 24 hours after the procedure to reduce the risk of bruising.

6. Cold Compresses:

If you experience any mild swelling or bruising at the injection sites, you can apply a cold compress to the area for short periods to help reduce these symptoms.

7. Be Patient:

The full effects of Botox may not be visible immediately. It usually takes a few days to a week for the treatment to take full effect, so be patient and give it time.

8. Avoid Sun Exposure:

Limit your sun exposure and use sunscreen with a high SPF rating to protect your skin from potential UV damage. Botox-treated skin may be more susceptible to sunburn.

9. Stay Hydrated:

Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated, which can help with the healing process.

10. Follow Up:

Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider to assess the results and make any necessary adjustments.

11. Don't Overdo It:

It's essential to achieve a natural look with Botox. Overdoing it can lead to a frozen or unnatural appearance. Discuss your goals and expectations with your provider, and follow their recommendations.

12. Report Any Concerns:

If you experience any unusual or severe side effects, such as difficulty swallowing or breathing, muscle weakness, or an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention.
